Vaccination in Pharmacies in Austria from 2027?

Austria plans to allow vaccinations in pharmacies in future. The aim is low-threshold access to prevention and possible relief for medical practices. Internationally this model is already established in many countries, where it is associated with improved vaccination rates and better reach. What decides its success, however, are clear quality standards, structured training, emergency management and good integration into existing health systems. Without those conditions the model can also bring challenges.

What is currently planned in Austria?

The Austrian federal government has announced that it intends to make vaccination in pharmacies possible in future.

The aim is:

easier access to vaccination
stronger prevention
relief for practices in primary care

Important:
The concrete legislation is still being drafted. That means many details – training standards, which vaccinations would be offered, organizational procedures – are not yet finally defined.

The discussion currently involves several parties:

the Chamber of Pharmacists (broadly in favour)
the Chamber of Physicians (more critical)

Why is vaccination in pharmacies being discussed at all?

One central point is access.

not because they are opposed to them –

Criticism and challenges

Sensible as the model may look –
there are legitimate concerns as well.

1. Medical assessment

A vaccination is more than a technical procedure.

Before every vaccination, questions have to be settled:

Is the vaccination currently indicated?
Are there contraindications?
Are there individual risks?

Weighing this up is part of medical quality.

2. Safety aspects

Severe vaccine reactions are rare,
but possible.

That is why it needs:

appropriate equipment

3. Documentation and integration

A central problem can be fragmentation.

If vaccinations are not documented properly,
