Hyaluronic acid is a substance the body produces itself, with a high capacity to bind water, and it can visibly hydrate the skin. Because of its large molecular size it barely penetrates into deeper skin layers from a cream and works mainly on the surface. Taken orally it is broken down in the gut and shows only moderate effects. Injections, by contrast, work directly and effectively, but carry risks. The actual effect of hyaluron is often overestimated and misunderstood.
