Gut Bacteria & Weight Loss - Do Probiotics Really Help?

The gut microbiome plays an important role in metabolism, immune regulation and possibly in body weight as well. A current evidence-based analysis from Austria shows, however, that on average probiotics lead to only a very small amount of additional weight loss (under 1 kg). That effect is statistically measurable but usually not clinically relevant. While the microbiome is biologically plausibly linked to weight, its current use – particularly in the form of over-the-counter probiotics – is not an effective strategy for weight reduction.
