Collagen: Hype or Real Effect? What Creams and Supplements Can Actually Do
Collagen is a central structural protein of the skin, and the body produces less of it with age. Collagen creams can hydrate the skin on the surface, but because of their molecular size they do not reach deeper layers. Collagen taken orally is broken down into amino acids in the digestive tract and is not built directly into the skin. Studies show small improvements in some skin parameters, but newer analyses indicate that these effects are barely detectable in independent trials. Collagen is not an ineffective fad, but it is far from the anti-aging promises it is marketed with.
