Sleep Aids, Melatonin & Co. - What Really Makes Sense – and What Is Often Misunderstood

Sleep aids do not all work the same way; they differ considerably depending on what is causing the sleep problem. Melatonin acts above all on the sleep-wake rhythm and can make sense when sleep times have shifted, while herbal preparations are usually mildly calming and tend to be used in a supporting role. Prescription sleep medication can be very effective in the short term but is as a rule not intended for continuous use. What matters is therefore less the question of the „best“ remedy than a careful assessment of the underlying sleep problems.
